John Wisor
Executive Director

Cathedral City Community Center
"Sir Wilfred Grenfell once said: 'Real joy comes not from ease or riches or from praise of people, but from doing something worthwhile.' The people from PIA, with their generous spirit and beautiful donation of plants, have done something truly worthwhile by transforming our Senior Center into a lush garden of delight. All members and friends of the Center have added to the chorus of what an amazing organization PIA is, and how valuable our new partnership."   John Wisor

When most people think of the Palm Springs area, they think of palm trees and pools and getting away from the big city. But as Riverside County has grown, so have the thousands of retirees that have made the Coachella Valley their home.  And to some of these Seniors, their home away from home is the Cathedral City Senior Center

For over 24 years the Center has addressed the needs of seniors from around the Valley in many ways.  In the height of summer when the heat is sweltering -- it becomes a cooling center.  People are free to come in from the heat, listen to the big band music on Thursday’s rehearsal day, and sip iced tea while enjoying a snack. On other days there’s bridge, bunko and bingo.  Still other times the latest line dances are taught.

But there’s more to this place, known as the Center with a Big Heart. There’s compassion, reassurance - and more importantly, a trained staff that knows the rights and privileges of  the aged and is ready to help.

The Center had expected to move into new facilities just prior to CalScape, making the timing of the installation perfect.  Due to unforeseen delays, the move was postponed until early 2007.  The PIA Cares team re-evaluated the original design on site and installed the plants in the old facility, greatly enhancing that environment, until they find their way to their new home.

"Serving as the local contact (and lead designer) for the 2006 CalScape PIA Cares installation at the Cathedral City Senior Center was an honor and privilege.  Working with my fellow plantscapers was just plain fun.  Thanks to the very generous donations from our vendors, the installation was a winner and the CCSC staff and patrons couldn’t be more appreciative.  Personally, being involved in PIA Cares at CCSC was one of the most enjoyable and rewarding plant “projects” in which I’ve ever been involved."   Greg Eberly, CLP
