Michele Jackson Executive Director

Shelter Network
"The joy PIA brought to our facilities with their gift of holiday decor will always be remembered as one of the highlights of my years of working with volunteers.  PIA volunteers did more than brighten our facility; they brightened the lives of hundreds of people in ways we will never really know.  I want to extend my most sincere gratitude to all the volunteers for their generous donation of time and effort on our and our clients’ behalf."   Michele Jackson

Shelter Network was founded in 1987 to provide a comprehensive coordinated network of housing and social services for the homeless residents of the San Francisco Peninsula. Initiated by a broad-based community response to the plight of homeless families and single adults, Shelter Network is a model of community involvement. Since the beginning, the community’s residents, religious congregations, businesses, and local government organizations have contributed considerable talent, hours, and dollars to Shelter Network.

Shelter Network opened with an annual budget of $150,000, two paid staff, a core of dedicated volunteers and community supporters, and a vision of starting the first housing program to help homeless families in San Mateo County. Now with an annual budget of more than $4 million, six transitional housing programs, more than 40 full-time staff, and hundreds of volunteers, Shelter Network is the Peninsula's principal provider of housing and support for homeless families and individuals. SN provides over 100,000 nights of shelter and serves nearly 3,000 homeless adults and children every year. Over 80% of families and single adults who complete Shelter Network programs succeed in returning to permanent homes of their own.

PIA Cares volunteers spread some holiday cheer at two of Shelter Network’s facilities in Redwood City and San Mateo.

“Our own company’s holiday work was overwhelming and all of our “elves” were busy, but the most amazing project we did that season brought joy to hundreds of individuals whose holidays weren’t so joyous. Working with my fellow ‘scapers to bring a little holiday cheer to the two Shelter Network facilities was the highlight of that busy time for me … very personal, very heartening, very memorable.”   Carol Peterson-Webber
